The panel, composed of three experienced tax litigators (including a former Supreme Court of Canada judge) and a seasoned expert witness, will exchange thoughts concerning ten key questions about expert witnesses, such when do you need an expert (and how to choose the right one when you do), using an expert at the audit and objection level, what assistance can counsel provide an expert with during the preparation of the expert’s report, key components of a good expert report.

Panel II

The panel will address the Tax Court Rules governing the admission of expert evidence with an emphasis on the role and duties of an expert witness. Through an interactive discussion, the speakers will also address critical issues of concern for the Court and tax practitioners when working with experts, including best practices for preparing reports and testifying at trial.
